FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer installation of the iQon-system?

Yes, we do offer installation of the iQon-system on location at our workshop in Trollhättan, Sweden (the hometown of SAAB).

If this option is of interest for you, please contact us to schedule a date that fits both parties. Who knows? Maybe we will be able to arrange so that you can visit the official Saab Car Museum while we get the iQon-system installed in your Saab 9-3.

Is Maps available for the iQon-headunit?

Yes! We have new worldwide maps (latest release is from October 2024) that we can load onto the iQon-headunit.

The fee (150 to 175 EUR depending on when you get the MAPS-Package) is a one time fee with free upgrades to the MAPS-application. This is to support our development but also the time it takes for us to flash the MAPS onto the headunit.

All the maps are downloaded locally, so no need the share internet connectivity with the headunit for navigation.

What kind of radio/communcation & music support does iQon have?
Does iQon support DAB?

The iQon supports FM/AM, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Phone + Bluetooth Music.

Unfortunately, there is no DAB. But as mentioned above, the headunit supports both phone and music-streaming, over bluetooth.

This is fully integrated into the 9-3 so you are able to control bluetooth via the steering wheel controls (such as answering calls and changing songs).

With this thorough bluetooth support, you could download your favorite radio-app on your phone and stream DAB-radio to the headunit.

Do we have to add an mic to use the phone functionality? No.
We take control of the built-in Saab Original microphone.

Does the iQon have support for USB?

Yes, the iQon does have support for USB.

Does the iQon have Google Play Store? What apps can i expect?

The iQon does not have the Google Play Store. We can however flash custom apps onto the iQon via our tools.

However a lot of online applications have lost support because of dropped APIs. The iQon headunit runs Android 2.3.7. We could possibly upgrade the Android version, but we would need build-files for that and nobody has them or wants to share them. Again, the big issue is that NEVS laid most of its employees off.

Does iQon work with the original AMP?

Yes, the iQon works with the original amplifier.
Everything is plug & play, just like the Saab Original Radio or Navigation.

However, if you lower the volume down to Zero when having the engine off, you might hear a very very slight noise on some sound packages. It’s almost impossible to hear and everything has to be completely silent. This is because the iQon does not handle AMP-MUTE correctly.

We have however developed a solution for this where we control the AMP-MUTE via the gateway, if you hold down the VOLUME DOWN button on the steering wheel for 3 seconds we can mute the iQon. Then when you press VOLUME UP we unmute the iQon.

If we were to get a hold of more documentation we might be able to facilitate a better fix on the actual iQon-headunit.

Does the iQon have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto/Reverse Camera?

Unfortunately, no.

The iQon was developed before CarPlay was a thing. But we might see Apple CarPlay and Reverse Camera get added later down the line with an addon-box.

Reverse Camera is actually already supported by the Parrot-platform natively, but because of slim to none in terms of documentation, we naturally can’t enable it by software.

Fortunately, the iQon-system uses something called an “LVDS Serializer” for picture/video transfer, because of this, it is possible to take over the display. This is something we might develop in the future or there might even be an solution out there already.

Is the LEDs on the side of the iQon white or green?

The LEDs on the side of the iQon is white, but they could be replaced by soldering new green LEDs.

I saw that this iQon solution + Gateway adds new functions to the 9-3.
Will eSID work together with this solution?

Yes! For more information, please see the official manual for iQon, here.

Some of our extra functions overlaps with eSID.
The original prototype GCG-Unit / iQon-solution did not support working together with eSID. But we developed a solution where you can enable “eSID Compatability Mode”. You do this by pulling both rear power-window buttons UP from the drivers door for 15 seconds.

While doing so, the gateway will disable the overlapping eSID functionality and print a message on the SID telling you that the eSID Compatibility Mode is now ENABLED. This config will be stored in the gateway’s EEPROM memory. To disable it you repeat the same procedure and wait for the SID to display the message: “eSID Compatibility mode DISABLED”.

NOTE: This setting can only be done the first time that the iQon is installed. If you try to do this after the first sleep cycle, the GCG-Unit (gateway) will print a message on the SID stating that the settings are unavailable, “please refer to the manual”.

To change this setting after the first sleep cycle, please remove the EHU fuse, wait for 5 seconds and then reinsert. You can now re-configure the gateway again.

What languages does iQon support?

The iQon-system supports multiple languages, where English and Swedish are a few of many languages that the iQon supports.

(A specific list will be added in the near future)

What model years of the Saab 9-3 does this iQon-kit fit?

This kit currently fits in MY07-MY14.

Who is this product marketed for? Who should buy this product and why is it special?

We don’t think this headunit-kit is for normal drivers, but probably more for Saab-enthusiasts. The only other car that has this stands at the official Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan, Sweden. That car is called the Saab 9-3 Turbo Edition by NEVS. All the other cars that had this (NEVS 9-3 EVs) has mostly been scrapped. And as of today there is a limited number of iQon-headunit kits available. We manufacture kits after our ordinary work days and the actual headunit does unfortunately not exist in larger numbers. Because of this, this kit will be more of a collectors item. This is for people that are after something that’s more unique and “original”.

This headunit is more of a modern version of the monochrome Saab-radio or Saab-navigation. This is as close as it gets to getting an modern OEM-feel many years after Saabs bankruptcy. To actually get a personal taste of what Saab was working on.

The alternative headunits out on the market usually lands around the same price point, and they are not fully integrated into the Saab 9-3 in the same way that the iQon is. On top of that, our kit is more or less completely plug & play with extremely detailed instructions.

The extremely nice thing about this headunit is that it’s not only integrated into the 9-3 software-wise (with date & time synchronization for an example) but also that it is integrated by looks. Normally, with aftermarket headunits, they look really aftermarket.

Also, as mentioned above, here you get date & time synchronization to be able to keep your service interval + timer based heater and some more functions that make your Saab feel more modern. For an example, diesel heater via remote control and auto-blink for lane change.

Where was iQon developed?

This Parrot-version of iQon was developed by Parrot in France together with Swedspot AB in Trollhättan and NEVS.

The iQon development was first started by Saab Automobile AB in Trollhättan, Sweden.

After Saabs bankruptcy, the iQon-team went along and started their own company in Trollhättan called Swedspot.

What is the return policy?

We offer 14 days return policy on orders that are not built by order.

What is the delivery time?

We do this on the side of our ordinary job, this means that all iQon-kits are built by incoming order. This means we have an delivery time of approximately 2 weeks (give or take).

But sometimes we are able to facilitate faster delivery times.
